If you’re having a party and The Wizard of Oz is your theme then these party supplies are exactly what you need. But there are plenty of other things you can do with this theme. If you are a teacher, or if you homeschool your children, consider using The Wizard of Oz supplies in conjuction with a unit about weather - after all, Dorothy’s first obstacle to overcome was a twister! To study tornados in a fun way, why not create a Tornado in a Bottle? It’s simple and fun.
Materials:
- 2 2-litre pop bottles with caps
- Duct tape
- Silicon caulking
- Water
- Drill (get an adult’s help with this)
- Food colouring (optional)
…..Some science stores sell a “Tornado Tube” adapter which allows you to connect the two pop bottles without drilling or gluing.
Instructions
- Take the caps off both the pop bottles.
- Drill a 1/2″ hole in the centre of each cap.
- Place the caps together and put a bead of silicon around the hole to seal it. Let it dry.
- Wrap a piece of duct tape around the outside of the two caps to firmly join them together. (If you purchase a Tornado Tube, then simply skip these steps and attach the two bottles together using the tube)
- Screw the double cap onto one of the pop bottles.
- Fill the other pop bottle about 3/4 full of water. Add food colouring to the water if you want.
- Screw the empty bottle onto the top of the bottle containing the water.
- Hold the duct-taped area with one hand and the bottom of the bottle with the other hand.
- Turn the bottles upside-down and swirl them in a few quick circles. A vortex forms as the water drains into the lower bottle.
For extra fun add platic confetti to draw more attention to the swirling effect of the tornado.

The Wizard of Oz was made into a musiclal in 1939. It features Dorothy as she goes on a fantastic journey and meets some amazing characters along the way.
This story is timeless and has such a great moral. At your Wizard of Oz party you must have a yellow brick road leading up to the front door of your home. You can either use Yellow butcher paper, yellow sidewalk chalk or even yellow washable paint. Once inside decorate your home with posters of the movie or you can make a house out of a very large cardboard box and have 2 witches legs underneath.
If your daughter is having the party then be sure and go buy her some red slippers just like the ones Dorothy wears in the musical.
For the centerpiece have a basket with a stuffed dog that looks like Toto.
Finally, have the movie playing on your TV as everyone comes in and for the rest of the party.

What would a Wizard of Oz party be with some kind of game witha Witch theme. Play a Witch’s Broom Ball Relay Race. While planning your Wizard of Oz birthday party, spray paint two shoe boxes of bricks yellow. Mark an “x” on the ground as the starting point. Place the “Yellow Bricks” a good distance from the “x”. When it’s time to play the game, have the guest divide into teams. Provide a ball and broom for each team. Have the guest use the broom to sweep the ball to the the yellow bricks. They must then have the ball go around the bricks and move the ball back to the next person in line.

Why not make magic wands you can eat. This can either be done with the little pretzel sticks or the large pretzel rods. Dip half of the sticks or rods in melted white chocolate. After you have done that roll the sticks in rainbow sprinkles.
