What could be more natural for a birthday party theme than Buzz Lightyear. His introduction in the movie Toy Story is as a birthday gift to a little boy named Andy.
The movie is all about the fact that Buzz Lightyear does not realize that he is a toy. He thinks he is the real Buzz Lightyear. The premise revolved around Buzz Lightyear’s conflicts with Andy’s other toys. The movie was such a huge hit that Buzz Lightyear party supplies have become extremely popular with fans of Toy Story.

Mr Potato Head was a great friend to Buzz! Start your party off with several Mr Potato Heads out on the table and have the children play and create until all the kids arrive. For younger children, print pictures of Potato head and have eyes. mouth, ears and clothing stickers to put on the paper. I would run this activity for about 20 minutes and then start a toy story game such as find Woody. Hide a Woody doll somewhere in the house and say “Buzz Lightyear to the rescue” and send all the kids to seach for him either outside (depending on weather) or inside your home.

If you’re having a Buzz Lightyear party keep in mind that Buzz loves saving people! You can purchase some green Army men from the toy store and hide them across your house and yard. Make a designated “Base Camp” by placing a tarp in the middle of the yard (or room) - get 2 discarded refrigerator boxes and cut them open on one long edge - then tape them together to make one giant line of cardboard. Paint the boxes with red or white paint, adding stripes and bright stars. Then arrange the box to make a sort of “room” around the tarp - just like Buzz’s spaceship. Have a countdown and let the kids run around looking for little green men to rescue! They’ve not only love finding the green Army men, but playing in the spaceship as well!

For your Buzz Lightyear party rent a bounce house that has a rocket or space ship theme. Decorate the party area with stars and a moon hanging from the ceiling. A star shaped cake would be cute and for centerpieces have a Woody doll, Jessie and a Mr Potato Head. You could even have a few Mr Potato heads out on the tables for the kids to play with and while they wait their turn on the Bounce House.

Play tag but with a twist at your Buzz Lightyear Birthday party. A few days before the party cut out huge stars out of cardboard or another sturdy material. Place them on the ground at your party area. The twist is the children must stay on a star, if they are on a star Buzz LightYear will not be able to tag them. Once they are off a star they are free to get tagged. Once they are tagged then they become Buzz and get to run around and catch someone off a star. Play this game until everyone is tired and start the craft you have chosen to do.

Have a space teasure hunt at your Buzz Party. Hide several objects such as rocks, toys, balls and anything you can find that Buzz may have left behind on his last visit to earth. Once all the items are hiden, send the kids off into space to find the objects, Don’t tell them what you have hiden so they can use their imagination. They will bring back stuff that were not hiden by you. It will be fun to watch them explore the party area.

You can play musical stars at your next Buzz Lightyear party. Cut out several large stars and place them in a circle, or around the room. Play some music and let the kids run and dance around the room. Once the music stops everyone has to find a star to stand on as quickly as possible. The last one to find a star is out - let that child decide when the music stops on the next turn. After each time, remove one star from the floor. Have a fun prize for the winner, like the Buzz Lightyear 36″ Mylar Balloon.

At your next Buzz Lightyear party let everyone at your party become a spaceman! Prior to the party collect empty two liter bottles - you’ll need two bottles for each person. Once they’re empty and clean, take them outside and use spray paint to make them silver. After they are dry use silver duct tape to tape two bottles together. Turn the bottles upside down, and you have your very own jet-pack!
At the party let guests use markers to make lots of fun buttons and lasers. When the decorating is complete use more duct tape to create a diagonal strap for the jet-pack. Once the strap is attached let each new spaceman put on his jet-pack and zoom around the room!

That person then continues in the same mannor, until the message gets to the person on the birthday child’s right. Once that guest gets the message they say it out loud.
